Although long considered to be a species of Apatosaurus, a 2015 study concluded that the original species of Brontosaurus excelsus was distinct enough from the type species Apatosaurus ajax to be reassigned to its own genus again, taking two other former Apatosaurus species with it; it is unclear which if any particular species Dinosaur King's model was based on, but given that its Moves are themed around lightning & thunder, and in the anime Spectre’s dinosaur is named “Brontikens”, it’s very likely it is meant to be Brontosaurus.

Still, various Dinosaur King media alternately call this dinosaur "Brontosaurus" and "Apatosaurus", therefore they are used interchangeably on this page in primary reference to their respective media's names.

Trivia

• Along with Megalosaurus, Pawpawsaurus, and Cryolophosaurus, it is one of the available dinosaurs in the Japanese Secret Egg II arcade card.
• Its Secret Moves are all based around electricity, likely referencing Brontosaurus' name, meaning "thunder lizard", although the name was in reference to how its weight would shake the ground like thunder when it walked.
• Apatosaurus' regular non-Spectral arcade form (species "Apatosaurus" in Japanese) is a Secret Dinosaur, while its Spectral Armor form (nicknamed "Bronto" in Japanese) is a Water Dinosaur with a Spectral mark-bearing pre-armored form. In the anime, the only form to appear is the full Spectral Armor form (nicknamed "Bronto-chan"/"Brontikens" in Japanese/English and species "Apatosaurus" in both, but also "Brontosaurus" to some Japanese characters), and it's a Secret Dinosaur. Both armored and pre-armored Spectral forms appear as Secret Dinosaurs in the TCG (nicknamed "Brontikins" in Thai) and as Water Dinosaurs in a version of the manga (name unclear, likely nicknamed "Bronto-chan" in Japanese again).

• It is the only Secret Dinosaur in the series that did not defeat a dinosaur, nor use any of its Secret Moves.
• Introduced in Jurassic Clash, Apatosaurus is one of the latest-debuting species in the TCG alongside Panoplosaurus and Lambeosaurus magnicristatus, just after Isisaurus, Cryolophosaurus, and Pawpawsaurus in Spectral Armor Shock.
• Although playable in the Japanese-only versions of the arcade game, there is an unused model of Apatosaurus in the programming of the later English version of the arcade game, though is unplayable by not being attached to an ID, likely meaning it wouldn't respond to a Japanese card's barcode.
